The story of the Suomy helmet begins in 1997 by Umberto Monti in Invertigo, Province of Como, Italy. Umberto Monti worked in Yamaha for a long time and was immensely influenced by motor racing. In dedication to his passion, he started to distribute the Bell helmets as the first distributor in Europe, and later he came with the Japanese DIC brand helmets in the market.
In the meantime, being dedicated to the helmet business Umberto Monti engaged his two brothers Valter, a motocross rider, and Maurizio who was a nuclear engineer by profession. Then three brothers together established the family business and formed the brand Suomy (pronounced su-oh-mee), the completely Italian brand.
Starting the helmet manufacturing company Suomy gained a breakthrough in 2000 signing a partnership agreement with one of the world’s leading racing motorcycle company Ducati. Under the collaboration and sponsor, the talented Ducati race riders started using Suomy helmets and owned several titles in SBK World Championships.
Suomy sponsored the high-caliber race riders like Troy Bayliss, Troy Corser, Aaron Slight, Ben Bostrom, Scott Russell, Ruben Xaus, Neil Hodgson, and James Toseland. The first success came in 2001, the SBK World Championship legend Troy Bayliss won the World Title wearing a Suomy helmet later he also won the world title in 2006 and 2008.
Sequentially, Neil Hodgson in 2003, James Toseland in 2004 and 2007 claimed the SBK World Champions. Meanwhile, in 2000 Suomy also debut in MotoGP World Championship and lead the 250 GP Championship with Manuel Poggiali, and won the title in 2003. Further, Suomy continued with Loris Capirossi and the brand ambassador Max Biaggi who won two SBK World Championships in 2010 and 2012.
