The motorcycle manufacturing company TVS Motor Company Limited founded in 1978 under the concern of Sundaram-Clayton Group, the major concern of TVS Group. Sundaram-Clayton Group established in association with T.V. Sundram Iyengar and Sons Limited, India, and Clayton Dewandre Holdings, the United Kingdom in 1962.
The company started its business by entering into the manufacturing of cast products and automotive parts like brakes, exhausts, compressors, etc. In 1976 the company established a manufacturing plant in Hosur, Tamil Nadu, India to manufacture mopeds and that effort later initiated the present TVS Motor Company.
In 1980, the company successfully produced India’s first two-seater moped TVS50. In the following years, they tied with Japanese company Suzuki Motor Corporation for technology sharing and improvements in manufacturing. In 1982, Sundaram-Clayton Group and Suzuki, Japan signed a joint venture agreement and incorporated it as Indian Motorcycles Private Limited.
In 1984 the company renamed as TVS-Suzuki and later it separated after 19 years in 2001 and the company renamed again as TVS Motor Company Limited. Then the business relation of TVS with Suzuki tied off but the technical aid agreement was prolonged for three more years with the endorsement of the Government of India.
Later, both of the companies continued their own business beholding separate brand names and products. Currently, TVS tied in a strategic partnership with German BMW Motorrad and producing lower-capacity BMW motorcycles in India. Further TVS also joined in motorcycle racing in partnership with French motorcycle manufacturer Sherco.
