Bell Auto Parts - Bell Helmets by Roy Edward Richter
The establishment of Bell Company traced back in 1923 as Bell Auto Parts that named by its location 3633 East Gage Avenue in Bell, California, a township of Los Angeles. The former and proprietor, George Wight was an animal trapper and fish cannery worker. He established the Bell Auto Parts and used to sell motor racing car parts and racing accessories in his shop.
In 1933, Roy Richter (Roy Edward Richter, March 16, 1914 – July 28, 1983) the former of Bell Helmets began his career at Bell Auto Parts store as a designer after graduating from high school. Richter was an enthusiast in auto racing and took part in several races driving his friend's car Model-T. At that time he used to design the auto parts and accessories in Bell Auto Parts and also build his first racing car named Betsy from the parts found from Bell's junkyard.
This was the car with which Richter attempted to start a professional auto racing career but soon he realized his passion is designing & making cars and racing products. So he continued with his passion and build many racing cars. The period 1937-41 counted as the golden years for Richter Race Cars as his cars won many championships, hundreds of races, and set countless track records by the racers in different racing categories.
Bell Helmets by Roy Edward Richter
In 1945, Richter sold his own car Betsy and spent all he had to collect 1000 dollars and bought Bell Auto Parts which was considered to be the county's first speed shop. From there he developed Cragar custom stainless steel wheel and started to sell in the market. In the meantime, Richter lost one of his closest friends Swede Lindskog who died in a race track accident. That incident pushed him more to create lifesaving and safer racing products.
In the sequence, in 1954 first-ever Bell helmet called “500” was produced in a garage behind the Bell Auto Parts store. Several racers in the Lincoln Racing Team including 1953 and 1954 Indianapolis 500 winner Bill Vukovich wore the helmet in the Carrera Pan-American road race in Mexico. Later Cal Niday becomes the first race driver to wear a Bell Helmet and had a crash but he credited the helmet to save him from the worst injury.

From the time of first manufacturing, Bell helmets rolled through continuous success. Richter supplied Bell helmets to more than 800 police departments’ motorcycle officers as required by the Los Angeles Police Department. Hence production and sales gone above the prediction and in 1956 separate Bell Helmet Company formed as a subsidiary of Bell Auto Parts locating at next door to the original Bell Auto Parts location.
In its lifeline, Bell Helmets touched many milestones upon times. In 1959 Snell Memorial Foundation released its helmet safety standards and Bell Helmets qualified as the first company who qualified by SNELL. In 1960 Bell becomes the official helmet supplier to the US Ski Team. Later in 1961 Bell expanded its product line in several categories which offered helmet models for auto racing, hockey, skiing, skydiving, baseball, football, police & firefighter, ski, and bicycle racing.
In 1966, Bell introduced the first-ever full-face helmet for the motorcycle rider which is counted as the revolutionary innovation in motorcycling history. Later Bell also introduced its first full-face off-road motorcycle helmet in 1971. In sequence, Bell also introduced an effective bicycle helmet “Bell Biker” after two years of prototyping and research according to SNELL’s strict standard in 1975 and that becomes the standard by which other bicycle helmets were measured.
In 1974 Roy Richter was honored by introducing the Speed Equipment Manufacturers Association (SEMA) Hall of Fame. And in 1978 Roy Edward Richter retires at 63 years old. In that retirement ceremony, a Yamaha trials bike was presented to him by his employees to ensure his retirement may not stay quiet. Later on July 28th, 1983 Roy Richter dies, following the complications figured in his second heart bypass surgery and thus shuts the Richter era in Bell.
