The brand and the company Shell is over a century old entity where the business activity of the entity traced far back to the early 19th century when Marcus Samuel decided to expand his business in London. He was in the business of antiques and interior design materials. He began to import oriental seashells from the Far East in London. Thus he initiated an import-export business under M. Samuel & Co. that later formed Shell Transport and Trading Company Limited by his sons named Sir Marcus Samuel (Jr.) & Samuel Samuel.
The official formation of the company Shell is recorded as in 1907 when Shell Transport and Trading Company Limited and another company Royal Dutch Petroleum Company from the Netherlands merged and formed the Royal Dutch Shell Group. Prior to that when Marcus Samuel senior died in 1870 he passed the business to his two sons Marcus junior and Samuel, they began to expand it, and particularly in the 1880s, they became interested in the oil-exporting business.
At that time oil was carried in wooden barrels which had the problem of leaking and required much more space. Hence to carry the oils in bulk quantity they commissioned a fleet of steamers to ship oils in 1892, which became the world’s first oil tanker to pass through the Suez Canal. Thus Samuel brothers achieved revolutionary success in the transport of oil and established also in the transport business.
Accordingly, in 1897 Marcus and Samuel renamed the company as Shell Transport and Trading Company and launched its first oil refinery at Balik Papan in Dutch Borneo. Thus a major part of modern Shell Company had born which major competitor was the American Standard Oil company at that time. Meanwhile, at the beginning of the 1900s’ another competitor Royal Dutch Petroleum Company (Founded in 1890) raised and spread its business with its own fleet of tankers.
Both the Shell Transport and Trading Company and Royal Dutch Petroleum Company used to serve quite in the same business zone at east. Hence in 1907, by the merge of both companies, the Royal Dutch Shell Group was formed officially and that is the official establishment dated of modern Shell corporation. Now Shell is a multinational entity that is a public limited company and Shell operates its activities and businesses globally. Accordingly Shell is present in over 100 countries in the world with a wide variety of petroleum & bio energy products.
