About
The foundation history of Michelin, therefore, Compagnie Générale des Établissements Michelin SCA (full name) is tracked in 1889 when Édouard Michelin and André Michelin, two brothers started to run a farmstead and business in Clermont-Ferrand, France. That time incidentally they repaired a cyclist bicycle’s pneumatic tire and found some faulty characteristics of the glued pneumatic tires. Hence, from there Édouard Michelin got interested and both brothers started to work on creating their own version of the detachable pneumatic tires, and accordingly, it turned up to the Michelin factory.
Then Michelin Tire Company was incorporated on 28 May 1889. The first production of Michelin brothers’ tires wasn't glued to the rim rather it was the easily removable and detachable type. Accordingly, in 1891 Michelin registered its first patent for a removable pneumatic tire. Later the tire was used by the professional cycle racer Charles Terront and he won the world's first long-distance cycle race, the 1891 Paris–Brest–Paris. Thus Michelin was established in tire manufacturing.
Hereafter, Michelin owns numerous inventions in tire manufacturing that includes the removable type tires, the pneurail tires (tires for the rubber-tired metros), self-supporting type run-flat tires (in 1934), the key innovation in tire history the radial tires (in 1946), etc. Thus now Michelin manufactures a wide variety and property of tires ranging from space shuttles, aircraft, automobiles, heavy equipment, motorcycles, and also bicycles.
In tire manufacturing, Michelin never narrowed its activities within France or the European regions. From the beginning, the company was focused to expand globally. The company established its first overseas manufacturing plant at Turin, Italy, in 1906. Accordingly, in the 1920s and 1930s, Michelin operated large rubber plantations in Vietnam to develop its own stock of raw rubber materials. In the 1930s Michelin also had bought then bankrupt Citroën Car Company because of its production efficiency and producing tires from there Michelin quickly spread throughout Europe and Asia.
Accordingly, in 1966, Michelin partnered with American Sears, Roebuck, and Co. to produce radial tires under the Allstate brand and sold 1 million units annually by 1970. In the meantime in 1968, Michelin opened its first North American sales office. Therefore, Michelin became able to grab the North American market rapidly. And thus now Michelin is expanded globally and commercially present in all the continents. Hence Michelin’s company mascot Bibendum, informally known as the Michelin Man is now present in over 170 countries in the world.
