Arai Helmet Limited – Kabushiki Gaisha Arai Herumetto
ARAI Helmet Limited (Kabushiki Gaisha Arai Herumetto) is a Japanese born company that design and manufacture top-notch quality build helmets in the world. Continuing till now from its home in Japan the concern founded in 1950 and started its full phase manufacturing from 1952. ARAI Helmet established by its founder Hirotake Arai who actually was a hat maker and a hard-core motorcycle enthusiast.
In the beginning, Hirotake Arai positioned after his father in his hat-making company in 1930 at Saitama, Japan. Hirotake Arai’s father Yuichiro Arai’s hat production company’s starting traced back in 1900, which was involved producing various types of hats and caps especially the Kepi-Styled caps. Hence positioning after Yuichiro Arai, Hirotake Arai focused to develop a new design of caps with sun-barrier for then developing the Imperial Japanese Army.

During the Second World War, the company halted its hat production and Hirotake Arai founded the Arai Sewing Company which produced T-shirts and overalls for the workers. Later the company started producing protective headwear for the construction workers when it made mandatory for workers by the Japanese Construction Industry Union.
At that time the protective headwear was used to make by resin outer shell lined with cork until substituted with the expanded polystyrene material. Being a motorcyclist Hirotake Arai also thought to make safety headgear for his own use while riding a motorcycle. At that time there were no helmet manufacturers in Japan and being a politically closed market it was difficult to get a proper helmet from out of Japan.
Soon Hirotake Arai builds his own helmet from fiberglass, resin, including comfort liner inside and that was the first helmet made in Japan. Later, also making a few helmets for the fellow riders, that effectively had launched motorcycle helmet manufacturing in the Japanese motorcycle helmet industry.
Then despite focusing on real business concerns taking the issue of head protection for fellow riders Hirotake Arai established Arai Hirotake Shoten Co. Ltd. to make safety helmets for motorcyclists. The company owned the Japanese Industrial Standards license in 1950 and thus Hirotake Arai began helmet manufacturing designated with H.A. (settled as ARAI in 1977) after his initials. And thus first Japanese helmet manufacturer established and started selling manufactured helmets in the market.
From the beginning till now, ARAI is a smaller and privately owned family business. This manufacturing company is driven by the same mission through the three generations from Hirotake Arai, his son Michio Arai, and his son Akihito Arai. Arai family believes in the foundational principles of protection first, exceptional quality, and rider comfort that have never been forgotten or compromised in over six decades of helmet design and manufacturing.

At present Arai helmets have two factories located in Saitama and Shinto, and have a separate shell inspection facility in Amanuma, nearby Saitama, Japan. ARAI Helmets are Handmade and Handcrafted
Every Arai helmet is very precisely handmade and handcrafted by highly skilled craftsmen and women specialist workers. From the shell molding to painting, liner sewing to helmet assembling, all the manufacturing and assembly work performed by the highly experienced hands in the factories in Japan. All the workers are in ARAI are highly skilled, experienced, and deliberately focused on the company motto, making helmets for safety not for making money.
In manufacturing, ARAI manufactures helmets by making the harder outer shell from sophisticated fiberglass material in the in-house mold as doing from 1950. The outer shell is shaped oval as an egg-shell that describes as Egg-Shaped Form (ESF) by Arai. It maintains superior strength of the shell and helps to easily slide on most types of obstacles in times of accidental crashes of motorcyclists.
The outer shell in Arai is molded by an innovative bag process called as bird's nest containing fiberglass and more than 20 other reinforcing materials inside including resin. That makes the strongest possible shell and it's done by highly experienced shell experts who are working for long and experienced in Arai. Here only laser cutting of the shell done by a robot but all the quality checking, finishing, painting, and graphic works done and checked by separate experts.
In the inner shell, Arai implements an innovative technology pioneered by ARAI. They use multi-density EPS liner inside that made with four or more different densities EPS pellets that create the EPS liner more capable to absorb the shock impacts. Hence, this type of EPS liner is more shock-absorbing, lighter, and provides possibly more safety against serious crashing impacts.
In the safety standards, Arai believes not to meet the safety homologations like SNELL or DOT as the final achieving standard rather Arai counts those as their starting point. That’s why Arai believes not to make helmets in only good enough quality in large quantities rather possibly make the best quality helmets within the ensured capacity. Hence Arai describes them as, “We are not good businessmen, but we are determined to provide protection for the heads of fellow riders”.
