Changing Motorcycle Engine Oil Without Replacing The Filter – Is That Good Or Bad?

Last updated on 08-Oct-2023 , By Saleh

Changing motor engine oil is a very important maintenance task that should be done in periodic intervals and that is scheduled as a mandatory periodic maintenance task by the motor manufacturers as well as the motor experts. Here motor oil filters are also the related part where oil passes through it to the piston and cylinder wall and here the question comes does it require changing the filter every time while changing the motorcycle engine oil?

Changing motorcycle engine oil without replacing the filter – Is that good or bad?

Changing the motorcycle engine oil filter every time while changing the oil is commonly a good practice. It helps to keep the oil clean,  running the engine smoothly, and prevents further clogging of the piston and other fast-moving parts by filtering the oil from hard particles, flecks of metal, debris, and thick deposits. Thus an oil filter ensures to supply of clean oil in every combustion cycle and keeps the engine rolling flawlessly.

Further, an oil filter also works to maintain a certain level of oil pressure inside the engine that is needed to spray properly the oil to certain sensitive parts like the piston and cylinder wall, crankshaft, camshaft, etc. Therefore, if the oil filter element gets dirty and clogged with filtered deposits then oil pressure and flow reduce. Thus it will hamper the smooth operation of the rolling parts, lose performance, and also can damage the engine.

Hence, it is important to change the oil filters within a specific interval. But should we change the filter every time while changing the oil of the engine? Here short and straight answer can be yes, but there are a few more things you can consider. Cause, often oil filter element placement is not so easy to work on and oil filter elements are not cheap in price for every motorcycle. Further, every owner doesn’t change the oil in the same kilometers of running.

For these reasons, we don’t need to replace the oil filters every time while changing the engine oil every time on a motorcycle. In such a case we should stick to the basic rules of changing the oil filter elements after every 5000-6000 kilometers in middle-size engines while using standard mineral oils. Further, the oil filter changing interval can be shortened or can be extended in the case of smaller and larger engines. Hence from the specific owner manual, we can get the data of the recommended interval of oil filter element change.

Again, in the case of metal or washable filters which are often featured in adventure, off-road, and dirt bikes those do not require any change if they are physically not dented, scratched, or damaged. Hence for those types of filters, it’s recommended to clean and wash those filters in the same interval as the disposable filters require the replacements, or it's wise to stick to the owner's manual recommendation. That’s the thing, enjoy safe and happy biking.
