Motorcycle lighting system is an essential part of an on-road or street legal category motorcycle. To be street legal and registered for road every motorcycle must have the features of proper lighting and signal system. Hence considering electricity supply and circuit pattern there is little variety in the system. Illuminating this issue here is our today’s feed Motorcycle Lighting System - Difference between AC & DC headlamp System. Let’s get in the discussion.

Motorcycle Lighting System

Motorcycle lighting system basically covers the headlamp and tail lamp unit. But modern road legal motors comes with few more basic signal features like turning indicators, day time running light (DRL), Pass/Flash, AHO and also the horns. Accordingly modern motorcycle lighting and signal system is much more power consuming. Hence the batteries are also much powerful.

Coming today’s focus motorcycle lighting system has a variety in point of electricity generation and supply system. Hence there are two type of lighting system available in the motorcycles in our market. The types are AC headlamp system and DC headlamp system. Both the system is frequently available in modern motorcycles as they have few different features.

AC & DC Headlamp System

The AC headlamp system and DC headlamp system both are structurally comes with very similar type of circuit. But they have few differences in headlight and tail light connection.

In AC headlamp system the Alternate Current therefore AC generates from the motorcycle power generator. The produced AC converted to DC and delivered to three directions maybe directly or through regulator or rectifier. Here the produced AC delivered the ignition system, battery and together to the headlamp and tail lamp. Hence rest of the signal & lighting operated after the battery current.

On the other side in the DC headlamp system the electricity production system is also same but the converted DC supplied into two directions. The DC supplied to the ignition system and to the battery. Hence all the lights and signals including headlamp and tail lamp also get the electricity from battery not directly from the generator.

Difference between AC & DC Headlamp System

Hence in AC headlamp circuit you can see the system operates the headlamp and tail lamp directly after producing power in generator. Here the power production is not uninterruptible as it varies according to engine rev or RPM. So electricity supply is also variable. Hence the illumination of the connected light a bit fluctuated in the low RPM condition of the engine.

The benefit of the system is headlamp and tail lamp load covered directly from the electricity generator. So the battery carries minimum load of other lights and signals. Therefore it can take loads of other auxiliary gadgets like GPS, Tracker, USB gadgets etc. Additionally in this type of system battery gets longer life but stock lighting carries few annoying issue.

On counter in DC headlamp system the headlamp and tail lamp gets same flow of electricity from the battery. So there is no fluctuation of lights due to RPM changes and lights are consistent even the engine is off or idle in low RPM. But the drawback of such system is the battery can drain very fast and it damages very fast. So this type of system the battery needed to be huge in capacity. Moreover extra load of the gadget should be used rationally in DC head lighting system.

Motorcycle Lighting System

So readers it should be enough to understand the motorcycle lighting system therefore difference between AC & DC headlamp system.
