Why Do Some Motorcycles Come With Over-Angled Side Stands?

Last updated on 18-Feb-2023 , By Saleh

Why do some motorcycles come with over-angled side stands? Did this question never come to your mind and you searched for an answer? Yes, that’s an interesting question that me also asked myself several times and now I have the answer. So guys here I am Saleh, let’s find the reason why some motorcycles have over-angle side stands that is far more angled than some of the motorcycles.

Why Do Some Motorcycles Come With Over-Angled Side Stands?

A motorcycle side stand is the most common part that is featured in every two-wheeler whether it’s a motorcycle, scooter, moped, or even a bicycle. It keeps the vehicle standing while in the idle condition which is absolutely not required in three-wheelers, four-wheelers, or in other motor vehicles. Whatsoever, besides the side stands, center stands are also very frequently found in most motorcycles and scooters.

Therefore, some motorcycles and scooters come with both a side stand and a center stand but some come with only a side stand. It’s actually a manufacturer’s choice and mostly they omit unnecessary weight and for some reason in the fully faired motorcycles. Whatsoever, some motorcycles feature a simply angled side stand to keep the motorcycles near to a perpendicular mode and some come with quite an extremely curvy angled side stand; but why?

Simply angled side stands are very commonly found in street-focused motorcycles and scooters which are solely designed for paved tarmacs and those roles within the city or urban roads. Those motorcycles or scooters mostly stand or are parked on solid and plain surfaces. Secondly, those motorcycles and scooters which also have center stands are featured with simply angled side stands. Hence in case of tire flattening issues, those can be parked on the center stands.

On the other side, over-angled or quite extremely tilted side stands are featured commonly in those motorcycles which don’t have a center stand in stock. Secondly extended angled side stands are very common in off-road or adventure motorcycles which are designed to roll on uneven terrains and no one can be sure about the parking surface whether it can be a plain or extremely uneven surface. Hence in such a condition over-angled side stands are the best solution to provide better idle standing on uneven terrains.

Thirdly, the adventure and off-road categories of motorcycles are very popular and often used for traveling for multiple days on unpredictable terrains. Hence those come with better shock-absorbing features and longer travel suspensions. Accordingly, putting luggage loads on those motorcycles the overall height reduces, and thus short angled side stand may not be able to keep the motorcycle standing properly and cause falling down. Therefore, an over-angled side stand is the best solution in such conditions.

Fourthly, when a motorcycle tire goes suddenly flattened down then it will not able to stay standing on normal angled side stands and surely will fall on the other side. For this reason, tubed-wheel motorcycles come with extended angled side stands. And for the same reason, fully faired sportbikes also come with extended angled side stands. So hope you guys now have enough reasons to have an over-angled long side stand in your motorcycles; thanks, everyone.
