Popular Yamaha YZF-R3 And MT-03 Models Are Being Discontinued
Last updated on 20-Dec-2025 , By Badhon Roy
The world-renowned Japanese motorcycle brand Yamaha needs no new introduction. Yamaha’s performance-oriented machines are extremely popular among bikers worldwide. In the entry-level sports and naked segments, the YZF-R3 and MT-03 have long been dream bikes for many riders.
However, Yamaha Motor India has recently made an official announcement regarding the discontinuation of marketing for these two impressive machines. Along with halting sales in India information related to both models has reportedly been removed from Yamaha’s official website.

Yamaha YZF-R3 And MT-03 Models Are Being Discontinued
Investigation into the main reasons behind the discontinuation of the Yamaha YZF-R3 and MT-03 reveals that these bikes were imported into India from Thailand as completely built units or CBU units. As a result, high taxation pushed the prices far beyond the reach of average riders quite some time ago.

On the other hand, due to their higher pricing the sales volume and spare parts availability of these bikes were very limited compared to competitors in the same segment such as the Kawasaki Ninja 300 and KTM RC 390. Since all previously stocked units at dealerships were sold out or cleared dealers also refrained from placing new orders.
As the company failed to achieve its targeted sales volume pre-booking and sales of these two models have been suspended in India for the time being. Yet the Industry Insights and the Automobile Insider reports suggest that CKD production with some engine modifications and updated design may take place in India in the near future no official statement has yet been released by Yamaha Motor India or Yamaha Global regarding this matter.

In conclusion from a performance and build quality perspective the R3 and MT-03 remain among the best in the global 300 cc segment. High pricing and import complexities are making it increasingly difficult for bikes in this segment to survive in the South Asian market. When Bangladesh increased the engine capacity limit to 350 cc all eyes were on Yamaha’s two 321 cc beasts the R3 and MT-03. But the recent discontinuation of these models in the Indian market has certainly come as disappointing news.
However, we remain hopeful that in the future Yamaha may introduce these bikes for South Asia through local CKD assembly or alternative methods at a more affordable price allowing Bangladeshi riders to finally experience them on local roads.
