Review of TVS Star Sport 125: Specifications Breakdown and Analysis:
Overview: In 2014, TVS Auto Bangladesh launched a 125cc hardcore city commuter “TVS Star Sport 125” in Bangladesh. After its launch, most people of Bangladesh who wanted to buy a fuel efficient, smart and powerful enough package were crazy for this bike. However the Star Sport that exists in India is a 100cc bike, there is no record of this 125 cc model in India. TVS motor launched this particular model only for Bangladesh market. Now let’s analyze the reason for this craziness. Design: Design wise The Star Sport 125 is not some over the world thing rather it is a common looking yet stylish bike with some Hi-Tech laser graphics. No additional scoops or gimmicks are on the bike. Nothing unnecessary has been added. The bike is made to provide daily laboring for average Bangladeshi middle class families. The only thing that this bike has to deliver is power, pickup and comfort. The Star Sport 125 has long seat, a smartly designed fuel tank, tinted visor over trapezoidal head lamp, the front bikini fairing and cowls have the same body graphics. The Hi-tech laser graphics on the bike announces its higher power, pickup and performance. This combination is the first of its kind. These graphicses look different and bright results very easy to get noticed. The side panels look attractive with this dual tone laser graphics. There are some plastic grills on the side panels. The tail lamp is beautifully laid out with the full design of the bike. Instrument Console: The instrument console is all analogue units with speedometer, odometer and a fuel gauge indicator. Switch gears, Grips & Mirrors: The switch gears on the TVS Star Sport 125 are very standard with a push button starter and a high beam flasher. The grips on the handlebar of the bike are standard and do the job well. The mirrors are big and well positioned. Engine: The TVS Star Sport 125 is powered by an all-new 124.8 cc, single cylinder, four stroke, air cooled, single spark ignition, charge motion variable timing intelligent (CVTi) engine with 54.5 mm bore and 53.5 mm stroke (Source). The compression ratio being 9.3:1 the engine can produce 10.3 BHP (approx.) of peak power at 7700 RPM and 10 NM of maximum torque at 6200 RPM. TVS used a VM19SH carburetor to feed the engine with a huge 16 Liter fuel tank with 2.5 liter reserve capacity. The double polyurethane foam filters element has been used as air filter for this bike. The CVTI Engine combines swirl and tumble motion to achieve very high in cylinder charge motion. The overall charge motion is three times more than conventional port designs. This apart, TVS has applied VTi Technology consisting of deceleration fuel cut and significantly reduced friction between piston and the cylinder wall that means during deceleration the carburetor decrease the fuel to very minimum to save fuel. This combination of charge motion and variable timing ignition improve the combustion and reduce fuel wastage to improve the fuel economy hence make the bike very fuel efficient. The Star Sport 125 can achieve an impressive 60Km/L of mileage and the top speed of 93 Km/Hr. This is the main reason that the Star Sport 125 had so much attention in its time.

Transmission: The TVS Star Sport 125 is mated with a 4-speed super smooth gear box. The Clutch is of wet-multiplate type which makes the gears smoother. The final drive is chain and sprockets. The bike has a chain box guard for protecting the bike from outside dusts and waters. Electronics of the Bike: The TVS Star Sport 125 uses a 12V, 7Wh battery and a Fly wheel magneto, 12V, 60W generator. The bike is equipped with a 35/35W clear lens multi reflector head lamp, a 5/21 tail/brake light, a 3W parking light and the turn signal indicators are 1.7 W each. Chassis and Dimension: The Star Sport 125 uses a Singlecradle tubular frame for all its harnesses which is light and fragile to in terms of highway tours but can however take all the beatings that have to offer for a city ride as a commuter motorcycle. It has overall length of 2005 mm, width of 750 mm, and height of 1110 mm. Suspension Setup: The Star Sport 125 uses Telescopic oil damped Front suspension and 2 step adjustable hydraulic shocks as Rear suspension which are attached with rectangular swing arms. Wheels and tires: The TVS Star Sport 125 is fitted with metallic silver finished 18 inch 5-spoke alloy rims looks fresh. These rims are very easy to clean and maintain. The Star Sport 125 is fitted with 2.75 X 18” tubed tire at the front and 3.00 X 18” tubed tire at the rear. Front tire pressure is suggested 25 PSI and at the rear 28 (solo) or 32 (with pillion) PSI. Braking: In terms of braking the TVS Star Sport 125 uses 130 mm dia (hand operated) brake at the Front and 130 mm dia (foot operated) brake at the Rear. This is a letdown as there is no optional disk brake offer of any kind from TVS Auto. Comfort and Handling: The TVS Star Sport 125 is made for comfort and handling in the city. The two step adjustable hydraulic shocks and very well cushioned long seat offers great comfort and space for both rider and pillion. The seat height is 780 mm which is perfect for average riders. The ground clearance is 165 mm which should be enough for most roads in Bangladesh. The wheel base is 1250 mm; kerb weight being 118 kg and maximum steering angle of 88◦ will definitely help the riders to control the bike in heavy traffic or crowded areas. Conclusion: The TVS Star Sport 125 is indeed a great commuter bike for any city or urban area. The bike is made for commuting. It gives a superb mileage with decent top speed. Though a front disk brake option would have been appreciated, the bike offers great performance in every aspect of city commuting. Moreover, being a TVS bike, the longevity of the parts and engine performance is guaranty in itself. So the craziness for this bike is somehow expected and not surprising.
