The brand and the company SHOEI were established on March 17, 1959, by its founder Eitaro Kamata in Japan, where the company started producing motorcycle helmets in 1958. This manufacturing establishment’s roots are traced back to 1954 when Mr. Eitaro Kamata established “Kamata Polyester Company” which used to produce safety helmets for the construction industry use.
Founding the company SHOEI Mr. Eitaro Kamata was involved in manufacturing motorcycle helmets. Unofficially it found that the brand name SHOEI formed picking the first three alphabets SHO from then SHOWA dynasty name and the rest two alphabets EI from Mr. Eitaro Kamata’s own name. So the brand name SHOEI completely reflects the Japanese legacy.
The brand name SHOEI is considered synonymous with the word “Premium” for a longer period as it ensure quality, precision, craftsmanship, and loyalty since its establishment. Although SHOEI helmets are distributed and sold globally, till today every SHOEI helmet is made in Japan in its own facilities located in Ibaraki and in Iwate, Japan where the head office is located in Tokyo, Japan.
In the manufacturing, SHOEI helmets are crafted in the production line where over 50 people are involved in a sophisticated sequence thus every SHOEI is handmade under a meticulous process that is developed in combination with the latest technologies, real field consumer feedbacks, sophisticated research & testing practices, innovative raw materials, and of course the 60 years of helmet making experience of SHOEI.
SHOEI Co. Ltd. owns state-of-the-art facilities in all the manufacturing factories in Japan. SHOEI also is facilitated with modern R&D and its own quality testing facilities where design and quality experts spent countless hours conceptualizing helmet design confirming the highest performance, functionality in the real ground, and safest characteristics to deal with crashing situations in extreme conditions. SHOEI helmets are also tested and qualified by the professional racing team hence it’s qualified for top-notch performances.
SHOEI helmets are carrying the racing DNA from the very beginning in their helmet manufacturing. It began to produce the helmets for professional motorsport since 1960, where Honda Motor Co. adopted SHOEI helmets as their official helmets in 1965. Accordingly, SHOEI also is the official helmet brand for the Honda Racing Corporation (HRC).
In the safety homologations, each of the SHOEI helmets is produced carefully to meet and exceed the Japanese Industrial Standard (JIS). Further, SHOEI produces the helmets according to the homologation standards standardized by other regional countries like US DOT, European ECE 22.05, SNELL, etc. Furthermore, SHOEI produces differently featured helmets for the different regions around the world to fit the helmets perfectly according to their physical shape.
Hence despite being a premium helmet brand and earning global successes, SHOEI remained relatively a smaller manufacturing company that holds around only 550 employees. It’s to strictly maintain quality and SHOEI legacy. Though SHOEI has strong distribution in Europe, America, and Asia and has overseas partnerships but its manufacturing facilities remained in-house in Japan. Thus SHOEI is maintaining its evolution of perfection until the day.
