The Review of YAMAHA Fazer or Fazer 16 (150 CC): Specification Breakdown and Analysis:
Overview: The Fazer is initially a bike that looks mostly like the FZ1000 Fazer by Yamaha, which is a 1000cc bike for the European market. It is actually a 150 cc motorcycle that Yamaha made for comfortable cursing with lots of control. It is basically the quarter faired FZ16. So, it is mechanically a FZ16 with a quarter fairing and two massive headlamp. How does is actually delivers. Lets find out.
Design: The YAMAHA Fazer got its body styling directly from the FZ1 or FZS1000 Fazer. It has a FZ1 like quarter fairing in the front and a big muscular, contoured, forward leaned fuel tank just like higher capacity bikes. The outer parts are made of plastic but the fit and finish is good.
The dual headlight setup is a blessing in the highway. Like the Fazer was equipped with a 140 section rear tires, the 41mm front shocks which is a affects the design quotient a lot. Actually the consumers of the 150cc street bikes want these two things which all of a sudden can change the look of the bike not to mention the handling performance.
The seat, side panels and rear cowls, tail lamp, the exhaust design all are taken straight from the FZ1. It looks absolutely a beast of a bike as per looks goes.
Instrument Console: The instrument console of the Fazer is the similar one that we saw in the FZS, which is an all Digital unit. The LED is panel has orrenge backlits. The console is equipped with a tachometer, a speedometer, an odometer, trip meter and a fuel gauge. The turn signal indicator, headlight indicator and service indicator are placed in the sides of the console. The console need a bit time to get adjusted to.
Switch gears: The switch gears of the Fazer is also similar to FZS. Those are standard and of premium quality as every Yamaha bikes. Other switch gears include pass lights, headlight switch and other common switches included push button start and Engine kill switch.
Engine: The Fazer has the same engine of the FZ16, an all new 150 cc engine which is a 153 cc single cylinder, air cooled, 2-valve, SOHC engine. The engine has 58 mm bore and 57.9 mm stroke means it is a square shaped cylinder. The compression ratio is 9.5:1 which ensure the longevity of the engine.
This engine can produce 14 PS of peak power at 7500 RPM and 14 NM of torque at 6000 RPM which is enough. The engine uses the wet sump lubrication like most bikes. This bike comes with 12 Liter fuel tank and feed through a carburetor. The Wet weight is 141 Kg (with full fuel and oil) hence the bike has a power to weight ratio of 4.7 HP per 100 KG. It has both Electric and kick starter.
Transmission, Clutch and Final drive train: The YAMAHA Fazer is mated with a 5-speed constant mesh gear box. This transmission uses a wet multi plate type clutch. The gear shifts are international pattern that means 1 down and 4 up. The bike is equipped with a toe shifter so you have to worry about you shoe’s. The final drive is chain and sprockets.
Electricals: The YAMAHA Fazer uses a 12 V-5 Ah Maintenance Free battery. The bike uses a CDI or Capacitor Discharge Ignition System. The Bike has bright 35/35 W Multi reflector clear lens dual Halogen AC head lamps, 5/21 W tail/ Brake light, each 10 W clear lens turn signal light and all other lights are 1 W each.
Wheels and Tires: The Fazer is equipped with 17 inch five spoke Black finished Alloy rims. The rims are fitted with 100/80-17 tubeless tire at the front and 140/60-17 tubeless tire at the rear. Which is ginormous in this segment.
Brakes: The Fazer comes with a 267 mm disk brake with dual piston caliper in the front and 130mm drum brake at the rear. The disk brake setup should deliver just enough and linear braking performance.
Suspension: The Fazer is equipped with a beefy 41mm Telescopic coil spring; oil damped forks at the front and a monoshock at the rear which are attached with rectangular swing arm. This suspension is superb in this segment for soaking up all the bumps of all kind roads with even a pillion in the back and offering great comfort at the same time.
Chassis & Dimensions: YAMAHA used a Diamond type frame for the foundation of the Fazer which should give better stability on any time. The YAMAHA Fazer has overall length of 2075 mm, width of 761 mm, height of 1119 mm and ground clearance of 160 mm, wheel base of 1334 mm. The wet weight (with tool kit, oil & 100% of fuel) of the bike is 141 kg. These mean that the bike has an average footprint in terms of dimensions but slightly bigger than a FZ because of the fairing.
Comfort and handling: The Fazer is a very comfortable bike to ride, thanks to its well cushioned seat and well engineered shocks. The handling of this bike is very easy thanks to its 1335 mm wheel base. The bike has 160 mm ground clearance which is enough for any road condition on Bangladesh.
Performance: This is the part where the Fazer shines like a glitter. The bike is made for performance. The performance on the traffics, city roads. Its an ultra flick able bike. But with performance the efficiency gets thrown out of the window and same happened with this bike too. The average mileage per litter fuel is around 25-30 KM.
Conclusion: The Yamaha Fazer is mechanically a FZS with a quarter fairing, a street naked which is very suitable for touring in the 150 cc segment with performance, elegance and style. The bike is actually a lord of the street as it is advertised. It is highly recommended for any rider who wants to ride in style as it is actually a very capable bike.
