Review of YAMAHA SZ-RR version 2 : Specification Breakdown and Analysis:
Overview: The YAMAHA SZ-RR v2 is a refreshed 150 CC premium commuter from YAMAHA Motors India LTD. This bike is a refreshed version of 2013 Yamaha SZ-R 150 also known as SZ 16. With this new SZ v2 Yamaha wanted to bring a new dimension to the concept of ‘Powerful and Stylish Commuter.
It is powered by the same FZ-fi engine but detuned to match its characteristics. Moreover with this new version, Yamaha made several cosmetic changes to make the bike look sportier. So, how much did they succeed? Let’s find out.
Design: The YAMAHA SZ-RR version 2 as a 150cc premium commuter motorcycle, the design is undoubtedly one of the best in the market. The SZ-RR v2 will catch the eyes of any individual passes by. The headlamp is inspired from its elder sibling FZ and it’s beautifully laid out. The tinted visor over the headlamp is well matched.
Fuel tank design is same as the 2013 SZ-R but more edgy and leaned. A new 3D emblem is added on the air scoop surface to accentuate the “SZ” brand identity. These air scoops on the tank gives the bike a streamline look that matches the large size front fender design. The side covers have been sculpted to look like a part of the frame which gives the body a Stylish & robust look.
The side mounted exhaust is fitted with new black finished metal exhaust guard that looks fantastic as well as protects everyone from burning their skin. The spit die cast aluminum grab rail gives the bike more sporty look. The tail lamp is also re-designed. From the sides the bike does look fast and very sporty. The SZ-RR v2 is available in 3 color choices that is Predator Cyan, Beast Black and special edition Matte Green.
Instrument Console: The instrument console of the SZ-RR v2 is an all analogue unit with newly designed dial sticker. The console is equipped with a tachometer, a speedometer, an odometer and a center placed fuel gauge. The turn signal indicator, headlight indicator and service indicator are placed in the top of the console. I would say that the decision of using this instrument console was definitely not a smart one as the competitors are moving towards the digital consoles.
Switch gears: The switch gears of the SZ-RR v2 are standard and of premium quality as every Yamaha bikes. Other switch gears include pass lights, headlight switch and other common switches included push button start and Engine kill switch.
Engine: The SZ-RR v2 is powered by the same 150 cc engine of the FZ-fi which is a 149 cc single cylinder, air cooled, 2-valve, SOHC, Blue core engine. The blue core technology of the Yamaha is a technical term for redesigned engines that are able create more efficient combustion and using the power more efficiently which results efficiency in mileage.
The engine has 57.3 mm bore and 57.9 mm stroke means it is a square shaped cylinder. The compression ratio is 9.5:1 which ensure the longevity of the engine. This engine can produce 12.1 PS of peak power at 7500 RPM and 12.8NM of torque at 6000 RPM which is low considering some of its predecessor but the power is more accessible with this version.
The engine uses the wet sump lubrication like most bikes. This bike comes with bellow big 14 Liter fuel tank and feed through a carburetor instead of fuel injection unlike FZ-fi. The Wet weight is 134 Kg (with full fuel and oil) hence the bike has a power to weight ratio of 4 HP per 100 KG. It has both Electric and kick starter.
Transmission, Clutch and Final drive train: The YAMAHA SZ-RR v2 is mated with a 5-speed constant mesh gear box having the ratio of 2.714, 1.789, 1.318, 1.045 and 0.916 respectively on 1st, 2nd, 3th, 4th and 5th gear. This transmission uses a wet multi plate type clutch. The gear shifts are all up pattern. The bike is equipped with a heel and toe shifter so you don’t have to worry about you shoe’s. The final drive is chain and sprockets.
Electricals: The YAMAHA SZ-RR v2 uses a 12 V-5 Ah Maintenance Free battery. The bike uses a CDI or Capacitor Discharge Ignition System. The Bike has bright 35/35 W Multi reflector clear lens Halogen AC head lamp, 5/21 W tail/ Brake light, each 10 W clear lens turn signal light and all other lights are 1 W each.
Wheels and Tires: The SZ-RR v2 is equipped with 17 inch five spoke matte Black finished rims. The rims are fitted with 2.75-17M/C 41P tubeless tire at the front and 100/90-17M/C 55P tubeless tire at the rear. Which is decent in this segment but some of its rivals have wider tire at the rear.
Breaks: The SZ-RR v2 comes with a 245 mm disk brake with single piston caliper in the front and 130mm drum brake at the rear. The disk brake setup should deliver just enough and linear braking performance.
Suspension: The SZ-RR v2 is equipped with a Telescopic coil spring; oil damped forks at the front and light weight single coil-spring; oil damped shocks with 100 mm stroke at the rear which are attached with rectangular swing arm. This suspension is decent in this segment for soaking up all the bumps of all kind roads with even a pillion in the back and offering great comfort at the same time.
Chassis & Dimensions: YAMAHA used a Diamond type frame for the foundation of the SZ-RR v2 which should give better stability on any time. The YAMAHA SZ-RR v2 has overall length of 2050 mm, width of 760 mm, height of 1100 mm and ground clearance of 165 mm, wheel base of 1320 mm. The wet weight (with tool kit, oil & 100% of fuel) of the bike is 134 kg. These mean that the bike has an average footprint in terms of dimensions.
Comfort and handling: The SZ-RR v2 is a very comfortable bike to ride, thanks to its well cushioned seat and well engineered shocks. The handling of this bike is very easy thanks to its 800 mm seat height and 1320 mm wheel base. The caster angle is 26 degrees makes sure that all kind of rider can ride this bike very easily and with much confidence. The bike has 165 mm ground clearance which is enough for any road condition on Bangladesh.
Performance: The SZ-RR v2 is a hardcore powerful commuter bike so top speed not much of a problem, this bike has a top speed about 110 KmpH. Also the SZ-RR v2 has the maximum torque at the 6000 RPM, so the maximum thrust will be available much quicker than previous model that also helps minimizing the fuel consumption of the bike. The fuel economy is around 50 KmpL on average which is good.
Conclusion: The Yamaha SZ-RR v2 is a perfect blend of quality, performance and comfort for a 150 cc entry level commuter with touches of elegance and style. It is highly recommended for any rider who wants to ride in style as it is actually a very capable bike.
