Review of 2016 Honda CBR 150R Indonesian Version:
Overview: The sexiest racing machine in the 150 CC category that ever made by Honda is the 2016 Honda CBR 150R Indonesian version which is made by PT Astra Honda Motor one of the subsidiaries of Honda Global.
The design of this very bike is borrowed from the 2016 CBR 500R whose body work is inspired by the CBR 600RR and CBR 1000RR super sport. The CBR design that we have been waiting for a long time is finally is here.
This time they changed the whole body work comparing to the older 2014 CBR 150R also modified the engine in the way that the power is more accessible in the lower rev-range. So without teasing around let’s see what are we dealing with here.
Engine: Becoming the flagship in the 150 CC sport bike category and the king of the performance is easy but remaining is the challenge is the toughest. On that matter Honda hits the bull’s-eye with this new 2016 CBR 150R. So this time they modified the engine such way that the power is accessible in the lower rev-range. Now they are using 149.16 CC, single cylinder, 4-stroke, 4-valve, liquid cooled with auto fan, single spark, PGM fuel injected, DOHC super smooth and revving machine.
The engine has a bore of 57.3 mm and stroke of 57.8 mm resulting that 149.16 cc of cylinder displacement. As we see the bore has decreased and stroke has increased which makes it a squired cylinder much like a naked bike engine. The compression ratio is now 11.3:1. So considering the fuel condition found in Bangladesh anything but octane is BAD for the engine.
The engine is feed through a PGM-FI fuel injection system and controlled by a much more improved and upgraded ECU or Electric control unit or a computer that ensures that the engine is feeding properly based on the riding conditions better than before. The fuel injection system of the bike (PGM-FI) is invented by Honda for giving the maximum efficiency as well as not compromising the performance by analyzing different riding condition, weather, altitude and inclination or disinclination, air temperature, engine temperature, humidity etc.
Now it also measures the bank angle of the bike while riding. Now the engine is equipped with NKG spark plugs. The engine is equipped with Viscous type paper filter element as air filter for its healthy breathing. The engine’s lubrication system is also unknown. All these result in 17.1 PS of peak power at 9000 RPM and 13.7 NM of maximum torque at 7000 RPM. The peak power has decreased but the torque has gone up and accessible much faster in the lower rev-rang. So thumbs up there.
The engine is feed from a 12 liter fuel tank. The Wet weight is 135 Kg which is 3 Kg lighter than the previous model as a result this bike has a power to weight ratio of 5.71 HP for per 100 KG. This might raise a question “Is the bike is slower?” No. the bike feels way faster than before because of that lower end torque. The CBR 150 has only Electric starter.
Transmission: The 2016 Honda CBR 150R is mated with the same 6-speed standard transmission 1 down and 5 up configuration, so no surprise there. The transmission has a wet multi plate clutch. The gear ratios are also unknown.
Design: The name is CBR 150R but it does not look anything like the previous CBR 150R. The completely new body work makes it way more desirable than any bike in the market. It looks so beautiful that one will lose his or her desire to any other bike. Yes it is true. The new front end and the rear end design will make you choose it over any bike.
This time Honda went with all LED. There is not a single conventional filament lights on the bike. The turn signal indicators are like some custom coolest lights fitted on the bike. The bike looks like something from the future. The front end has a twin LED head lamp the sexiest on the market, period. The tail is splited and raised for better aerodynamics.
The fuel tank looks sporty and has a nice contour to it that helps the rider to grab tight the bike with thighs which will give the rider better control over the bike in any where any time. The rims are taken from the concept bike of Honda that are also been used in the Hornet.
The exhaust is designed so beautifully that the pipe is perfectly parallel to the ground and the muffler is parallel with the rear end of the seat. With the new color combination any one will fall in love with it the moment he sees it. The bike looks fast, is fast and feels dreamy. The color choices are MotoGP Repsol Edition, Victory Black Red, Slick Black White and Racing Red.
Instrument console: The 2016 Honda CBR 150R Indonesian version got rid of the semi digital unit of the old one and adopt the market demand. Now it uses an all new all digital unit with a blue backlit Black & White LCD display. It has a tachometer, speedometer, trip meter, odometer, gear counter, clock, fuel gauge and average fuel consumption meter. There are some indicators to assist the rider.
Switch Gears: The switch gears of the CBR 150R is also typical Honda type. No engine kill switch and Headlight switch as the bike comes with AHO. The horn and turn signal switches has exchange place as the bigger Honda bike. That means the Horn switch is in the turn signal switched place and the turn signal switch is in the Horn switch’s place. The bike has a pass light switch.
Electricals: The 2016 Honda CBR 150R uses a 12 V, 5Ah maintenance free battery and an AC generator. The bike uses a Digital Transistorized Spark Ignition System. The Bike has brightest Low /High beam clear lens DC LED head lamp, LED tail /Brake light and each LED clear lens turn signal light. The bike has a bank angle sensor that automatically shuts off the engine if it falls down.
Chassis & Dimensions: Honda used a Diamond Truss frame for the foundation of the 2016 CBR 150R, which should give this bike more stiffness and stability on the highway, city roads and corners too. The Honda CBR 150R has overall length of 1983 mm, width of 694 mm, height of 1038 mm, lower but enough ground clearance of 166 mm and wheel base of 1311 mm. The wet weight (with tool kit & 90% of fuel) of the bike is 135 Kg.
That means the bike is smaller and shorter than the previous generation which makes it more controllable and manageable on the road. The wheel base is bigger and lower the bike for more stability on the highway and lower the center of gravity hence it should be more agile than the previous model.
Suspension: The 2016 Honda CBR 150R has the same suspension setup as its previous generation. So, that is Telescopic forks at the front and 5 steps adjustable Spring Loaded Hydraulic Type Pro-Link Monoshock at the rear which are attached with rectangular swing arm. The reason behind that would be the suspension was great on the older one, so why change it? This setup serves the purpose well for which it was made, giving stability.
Wheels, Brakes & Tires: The 2016 Honda CBR 150R uses different wheel design as mentioned earlier 17 inch 5-spoke splited alloy wheels and the brakes and tires are same as before, 276 mm Disc with Nissin dual caliper at the front which is the best in this segment and fitted with 220 mm rear disk with Nissin single caliper. The tires sizes are 100 /80-17” at the front and 130 /70-17” at the rear. Both of these tires are tubeless and offer great amount of grip in the competition.
Performance: The previous CBR was a fast accelerating bike but this one accelerates like nobody’s business, 0-100 with in just less than 9 seconds, thanks to its better aerodynamic design. And also gives and average mileage of 45-50 Km/L which is WOW considering the performance it gives.
The liquid cooled engine with an auto fan the bike should perform cooler and better than any air cooled engines. The bike should handle well in the corners and high speed because of its Diamond Truss frame, wide tires and suspension setup. But this bike suffers measurably in the off-road. This is an Asphalt king not for off-road as before.
Comfort and Handling:
The 2016 Honda CBR 150R is designed as a super sports bike. There comfort is never a priority. But it is a Honda. So they add a relatively nice cushioned seat which is spacious for rider but might not be very comfortable and the rear seat is way smaller now because of the overall design of the bike, it had to be small.
The mystery of the suspension setup continues this time too. The way it performs and handles the bumps and gives stability on high speed run is very impressive. No vibration or instability on high speed and handles city traffics, the extremely flick ability and nimbleness remains. The overtaking capability is dramatically improved as a result of that low end torque. Being light and fully faired the wind blast from large vehicle makes it unstable which is very dangerous in the highway. Other than that it is the king of the performance.
Conclusion: The 2016 Honda CBR 150R Indonesian version is another proof that does not matter where ever it was made “Honda is Honda”.
